FRANKFORT, Ky. (October 15, 2024) – Today, Auditor Ball updated the General Assembly on her comprehensive examination of the Kentucky Department of Education as required by House Bill 825, which was unanimously passed by the General Assembly and became law without the Governor’s signature.
“Kentucky’s children deserve to receive a quality education, but unfortunately kids are falling behind all across the Commonwealth,” Auditor Ball stated. “This is the most comprehensive examination to be conducted of the Kentucky Department of Education, and the findings should provide a path toward Kentucky becoming a national leader in education.”
Alarmingly, according to the Kentucky Department of Education, less than half of all Kentucky’s elementary, middle, and high school students are proficient in reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.
The Auditor will also examine the Kentucky School for the Deaf, Kentucky School for the Blind, and the department operated area technology centers. The examination includes reviewing academic standards, statewide accountability and assessments, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, preschools, and model curriculum to identify areas of operation lacking efficiency and effectiveness.
The final report will be made available to the General Assembly on July 1, 2025.
